Getting Started and FAQ

Do I need a referral?

No. You can contact me directly to inquire about services for yourself or your child. Professionals, such as doctors, teachers, and guidance counsellors, can also help you connect with me, but a referral form is optional.

If you plan to use insurance or an employee assistance program, check whether your plan requires a referral or authorization before booking.

What happens during the first appointment?

The first appointment is an opportunity to get to know each other, discuss what brings you to therapy, and explore what you hope will feel different. We review confidentiality, consent, and practical details, and begin deciding together how therapy may help.

For children, the first appointment may involve parents or caregivers, the child, or a combination, depending on the situation. We will clarify who should attend before your appointment. You do not need to prepare a detailed explanation or have all the answers.

Do parents attend their child’s sessions?

Parents and caregivers are important partners in the therapeutic process. Their involvement depends on the child’s age, needs, goals, and circumstances.

Some appointments may include the parent and child together; others may involve individual time with the child or separate caregiver meetings. We discuss how to share useful feedback while respecting the child’s privacy and creating a space where they can express themselves.

For adolescents, we also discuss confidentiality and caregiver involvement as part of the consent process.

What ages do you work with?

I work with children aged 3 and older, adolescents, and adults. I also offer support to parents, caregivers, and families.

Therapy is adapted to each person’s developmental stage, communication style, interests, and goals. Sessions may include conversation, play, creative activities, or a combination of approaches.

Can appointments happen virtually?

Absolutely. Virtual appointments are available when appropriate for your needs and circumstances. Some children can also participate virtually, with activities and caregiver involvement adapted to their needs.

You will need a suitable device, a reliable internet connection, and a private space where you can speak comfortably. We will review the practical arrangements and a plan for technical difficulties before beginning. Please let me know where you will be physically located during appointments so we can confirm whether I can provide services there.

What does therapy cost, and might insurance cover it?

Standard appointments are 50 minutes. Current fees are:

  • Individual counselling: $150

  • Play therapy: $150

  • EMDR: $150

  • Family therapy: $150

  • Clinical Consultation: $150

Some extended health insurance plans cover services provided by a Registered Social Worker. Coverage varies, so please confirm your eligibility, reimbursement limits, and any referral requirements with your insurer.

If you are using an employee assistance program or another funding source, please confirm arrangements before booking. Visit the Fees and Policies page for payment and cancellation information.

How often will we meet, and how do we review progress?

We decide on appointment frequency together, based on your goals, needs, availability, and circumstances. Some people benefit from weekly appointments; others meet less frequently. The number of sessions varies.

We regularly review what is helping, what remains difficult, and whether our approach needs to change. With children, this may include caregiver feedback alongside the child’s experiences and therapeutic goals.

How do I request an appointment, and when can I expect a reply?

Use the contact page to send a brief inquiry for yourself or your child. Include your preferred contact method and a general description of the support you are seeking. You do not need to share detailed or sensitive personal information in your initial message.

I aim to respond within 1-2 business days. We can then discuss availability, answer initial questions, and determine whether my services may be a good fit.

What if I still have questions?

Reach out anyway. I offer a free 15-minute consultation if you have more questions about the process, my approach or any other questions not covered on this website. Let’s make this as stress-free as possible.
